Convert Any Video to PlayStation (PS4/PS5) for Free — Step-by-Step Guide
Playing your personal videos on a PlayStation (PS4 or PS5) requires converting them to a compatible format and transferring them to the console. This guide gives a concise, practical, step-by-step workflow using free tools and settings that work reliably.
What you need
- A Windows, macOS, or Linux computer.
- A USB flash drive formatted as exFAT (recommended) or FAT32.
- A free video converter (example: HandBrake).
- Your video files.
Recommended free tool
- HandBrake — open-source, cross-platform, supports most input formats and outputs MP4 (H.264) which is widely compatible with PlayStation.
Step 1 — Prepare the USB drive
- Plug in the USB drive.
- Format it as exFAT (supports files >4 GB) or FAT32 (max 4 GB). On Windows: right-click drive → Format → choose exFAT/FAT32. On macOS: Disk Utility → Erase → Format: exFAT.
Step 2 — Install and open HandBrake
- Download and install HandBrake from its official site.
- Launch HandBrake and click “Open Source” to load your video file.
Step 3 — Choose output container and codec
- Set Format to “MP4” (PlayStation supports MP4).
- Under Video codec choose “H.264 (x264)”. This gives maximum compatibility.
- Set “Constant Quality” RF to around 20–22 for good balance of quality and file size (lower RF = higher quality).
Step 4 — Adjust resolution and framerate
- In the “Dimensions” tab, set resolution to 1920×1080 for Full HD or 1280×720 for HD if you want smaller files.
- In the “Video” tab, set Framerate (FPS) to “Same as source” or ⁄60 depending on the original file. Tick “Constant Framerate” to avoid playback issues.
Step 5 — Audio and subtitles
- In the “Audio” tab, choose AAC (avcodec) with a bitrate of 128–192 kbps for stereo audio.
- If you need subtitles, add them in the “Subtitles” tab and choose whether to burn them in or keep them selectable.
Step 6 — Start conversion
- Choose a destination filename on your computer.
- Click “Start Encode”. Conversion time depends on file size and CPU.
Step 7 — Transfer to the PlayStation
- After conversion, copy the MP4 file to the USB drive in the root directory or a folder.
- Safely eject the USB drive from your computer.
Step 8 — Play on PS4/PS5
- Plug the USB into the PlayStation.
- On the console, open Media Player (PS4) or Media Gallery/Media Player (PS5) app.
- Locate the USB device and select the MP4 file to play.
Troubleshooting tips
- If the file doesn’t show up, confirm the USB is formatted as exFAT/FAT32 and that the file extension is .mp4.
- If playback stutters or audio is out of sync, re-encode with Constant Framerate and ensure audio codec is AAC.
- For very large files, use exFAT; FAT32 limits files to 4 GB.
